Brovia

Castiglione Falletto, Piedmont

In 1863 Giacinto Brovia founded the estate in the hamlets of Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of the Barolo area. The family has been continually engaged in growing grapes and wine production since that time. Nowadays, Cristina and Elena represent the fourth generation and are completely engaged in this family-run estate, while Alex Sanchez, husband of Elena, has joined the family business as winemaker.

Brovia family, from generation to generation, has been a conscientious buyer of some of the finest vineyard sites in the Barolo area, concentrating their efforts in their home village of Castiglione Falletto and the neighboring Serralunga d’Alba. Brovia owns land in a variety of the best Barolo “cru”, such as Rocche, Villero and Garblét Sue, all in Castiglione Falletto, as well as Brea in Serralunga.

The Brovias are extremely conscientious winegrowers and farm organically in every sense of that word: periodically, they perform soil analyses to ensure that the elements are in equilibrium, pruning is only done by experts who are also involved in the other aspects of winemaking and grape clusters are thinned, when necessary, to improve considerably the quality.

Brovia estate has a traditional winemaking style, with long fermentations and aging in big Slavonian and French oak casks. Wines are then bottled without filtration and then released on the market after an additional 18-24 months of bottle aging. They are long-lived classics as well as pure wines, since the Brovia family is meticulous in all aspects of viticulture and winemaking in order to comply with the philosophy of producing only top quality wines. Their Barolos have distinct personalities that reflect the individual differences between their great terroirs, they express the subtle, complex and layered nuances that mimic the climatic condition for which Nebbiolo is named.

“The Brovia wines have often been outstanding, but over the last two decades or so, quality and consistency have both surged, placing this small, family-run estate in the upper echelon of Barolo producers”. Antonio Galloni, January 2015, Vinous
