Bruno Rocca

Barbaresco, Piedmont

Historic records show that some of the Rocca’s family vineyards were established in the Barbaresco area as early as 1834. After about 150 years of the family growing and selling grapes, Bruno Rocca took charge of the family business and started making his own wine in 1978: he was one of the protagonists and a pioneer in the oenological renaissance in the Langhe area during the 1980s (his first wine was bottled in 1982), eventually establishing his name as one of the finest producers in Barbaresco.

Today, Bruno’s son and daughter are also involved in the winery business: Luisa, who manages the commercial aspects of the company for the most part, and Francesco, who takes care of the vineyards and cellar activities. Total production is around 60,000 bottles per year from his owned 15 hectares of vineyard.

The outstanding quality of his wines is due to the quality of the fruit grown in his vineyards, which have always been at the heart of the estate. Bruno Rocca owns vineyards in some of the most prestigious sites of Barbaresco, such as Rabajà, Currà, Fausoni, Marcorino and San Cristoforo, but he also makes an excellent Barbera d’Asti from grapes grown in vineyards he bought in Vinchio, one of the best areas for Barbera in the Asti area.

Grape growing is sustainable, no chemicals are employed; leguminous plants are sowed between the rows.
The wines’ style conveys the continuous research aimed at reaching the best quality, reflecting the terroir and the winemaker’s personality.

"Rocca's 2014 Barbaresco Rabajà captures an attractive stylistic middle ground between the depth that is typical of this site and the more vibrant, energetic style that is the house signature of the Bruno Rocca wines today. A classically austere, tannic wine, the 2014 is going to need a number of years to come together. Today, the 2014 is an intensely saline, focused wine." Antonio Galloni, Vinous
