Ettore Germano

Serralunga d'Alba, Piedmont

The Germano family owns vineyards in Serralunga since 1856 but only Sergio Germano, son of Ettore, developed the desire to create a complete wine estate in order to grow its own grapes and produce its own wines. In 1985, as soon as he finished his studies at the prestigious Institute of Viticulture and Enology in Alba, Sergio started working for the family property in Serralunga together with his father Ettore. He is certainly the person who, more than anyone else, has influenced Sergio’s path by teaching and passing on the passion to properly work in the vineyard, keep the vines in good health, avoid the use of pesticides and protect the biodiversity.

Sergio’s Barolos and other red wines are all made from 10 hectares of vineyards located in the municipality of Serralunga, in the southeast corner of the Barolo appellation. He does much of the fieldwork himself, with the help of his wife Elena and a small crew, and the choice of the vineyards for the Barolo production respects very specific rules: it is only produced from at least 15 years-old Nebbiolo vineyards and the winemaking follows the traditional style of production, with long macerations and aging in big oak barrels. Three Barolos from single vineyards represent the flagship of the estate: Prapò, Cerretta and Lazzarito are some of the very best sites in the Barolo area.

Moreover, Sergio has always been fascinated by the production process of white wines, a passion he inherited from the father, a very inquiring man, who loved experimenting. That is why he also owns vineyards in a very different area just outside the Barolo wine region to take up the challenge of producing vibrant and intriguing white wines in a land known for reds: besides some amazing Barolos, he also makes one of Italy’s best Rieslings, and some excellent Alta Langa sparkling (Champagne style) wines.
